One primary problem with these stories is isolating the truth from the fiction. For many new aspiring Internet marketers, working from home making a decent income is the ultimate dream job. The question here is; "How do I find my new customers and present my sales message to them through email in an acceptable manner that will result in a sale?"

Let's cut to the chase and outline what does work and what doesn't. But first, you need to know the basic two types of email marketing.

They are:

"SPAM" - The term for unsolicited email, the practice of sending a person an email without their permission. Generally, SPAM refers to commercial email, often sent in bulk to a large number of recipients, intended to sell something, not just a contact to a specific individual.

"Opt-In" - The term used by Internet marketers for solicited commercial email, the practice of sending a person email with their permission. This is also referred to as "legitimate marketing."
Tip! This article was provide courtesy of Spam-Site.com where you can learn lots more about spam blocking software and utilities.

The argument

Spammers argue that most people don't object to receiving "commercial snail-mail" at home sent through the postal service, so why should they object to receiving it through electronic email. Also, if they send out enough SPAM, they are likely to make it worth their while making a reasonable amount of sales. The old theory, of throwing enough mud on the wall, some is bound to stick. Is this a reality, and what are the facts?

Opt-In marketers feel Spammers are ruining the online marketplace by regularly irritating potential online buyers through Spam instead of creating goodwill through permission marketing. The hatred against Spam is making it difficult for legitimate marketers through new restrictive regulations and increasingly more unreceptive potential buyers.

Commercial snail-mail Vs. Email

Snail-mail is the term used by Internet users for physical mail sent through the Postal Service. Email is the term for mail sent electronically over the Internet. Snail-mail postage is paid for by the sender and easily identified by the recipient as "junk mail" so it often can be immediately disposed of without the need to read. It cost the receiver nothing to receive and little time to review. Because it is still unsolicited mail, the sender may receive requests to remove the recipient from the mailing list. I've even had one individual send me a brick with one of my prepaid post cards glued to it, even though it wasn't unsolicited. You just don't create the level of animosity and problems with snail-mail, you can do with email. Here's why.
Tip! Spammers are not mentally challenged, as their spelling would have them appear. They spell words incorrectly on purpose to get around the various spam blocking devices in your email and on your server.

Email has a unique set of problems not generally associated with snail-mail. The receiver must pay to receive it. How? By paying for Internet access and the time required to download and review the email. And, Internet viruses often enter computer through emails, especially attachments. I've replaced two hard drives resulting from viruses even though I use the best virus protection software and a firewall.

Spammers send out an enormous amount of irritating email. I receive about 100+ spams per day, even though I keep adding them to my "junk Email" blocking list. It takes a lot of time to download them, review their content, and finally send them to my junk email filter. Daily my virus protection software warns me about viruses attempting to break into my computer.

Needless to say, people get VERY irritated when receiving spam and the vast majority wouldn't consider making a purchase from a Spammer, though they would from someone they found online and became interested in their product or service. Spammers can create great animosity against their company and even have Internet services terminated. The world class Spammers setup and close their Internet services almost daily. Sure, they can make some sales, but do you feel irritating 99% of their potential buyers is the best approach? These people are only after the fast buck and have no consideration for other people. There is a better way!
Tip! Having a host that provides exceptional Spam blocking services is a must these days. Webmasters and business owners can find their domain email particularly at risk to Spam as their email addresses may be freely available on their websites for both humans, and so-called 'spambots' to find.

The right approach

I feel it's obvious from this brief overview that spamming is not the correct approach to email marketing. Building a potential customer Opt-In email list can be done once you know the insider techniques. It's not instant like purchasing an email Spam mailing list, and is a lot of work. But your goal should be to build a reputable company online, with repeat customers, just as a brick-and-mortar (a physical off-line store) business does.

Don't feel discouraged, believing it will take months and years to start making a good income online through online email marketing. It can be done in just a matter of days depending on your approach. If you control your own quality product, like an e-book targeted to a specific niche market, you may get existing marketers already having large mailing list interested in offering it to their customers for a share of the profits. This is called a JV (Joint Venture). Their sales can be tracked automatically with new low cost affiliate marketing software or an online service. In some cases, their commissions can even be made automatically and even you will receive your check from the payment service.
Tip! Now the problem I have with spam blocking software is that I must configure it to filter out certain email types, categories and words. I happen to use Outlook 2003.

New low cost software and services can completely automate your email marketing program. You can be a non-technically oriented person, barely understanding how the Internet works and still make vast profits once you know the "tricks of the trade." It's really easier to make a good profit by doing things right from the beginning, than to try the so called spamming shortcut and find yourself overwhelmed with a world of problems.
Is Your Spouse Cheating? What is Your Spouse Doing Online? Find out Easily with PC Pandora!

Your objective should be to ultimately develop either a powerful JV group marketing your personal products, develop your own massive mailing list of Opt-In subscribers to your own newsletter or to periodic marketing updates, or a combination of both. By learning which software to obtain, how to use it, and how to secure free email and website marketing materials, you can save an enormous amount of time, money and especially frustration. There are courses available to effectively walk you step-by-step through the correct process.
How to block SPAM bots? Encode HTML of your web pages, making them visible by web browser only

This non-spam approach can help you gain a quality group of Opt-In individuals eager to purchase your products and refer their friends and associates to you. This is the long-term credible approach to building a solid company and enabling you to fulfill your goal for attaining your dream business. What? Spam, of course. This article gives you a solution to radically, and quickly, reduce the amount of spam messages you receive to a bare minimum.

Personally, I get hundreds of unsolicited spam emails every single day, inviting me to enlarge this, reduce that, pay off my debt with another debt (how does that work?)... you know the type.

I'm also subscribed to dozens of ezines as part of continuing research and keeping my 'finger on the pulse' - and apart from those that stand out from the crowd and offer really valuable information, I've mostly forgotten which ones I'm subscribed to, and which ones are unsolicited.

The danger is of course that by clicking the unsubscribe link on pure spam messages, you're often just confirming your existence to the spammer. So unless I'm really sure it's a genuine unsubscribe link, I steer well clear, which of course doesn't help my email levels.

The issue is really about email messages I want to read, versus those I don't - and what to do with those that I don't want to read.

Sorting through them manually would take hours every day, which for most people is clearly impractical - so I looked for solutions that would help me out, and came across one that works very well for me.

As a result, I now get just a few relevant emails that I actually want, or need, to read, ready and waiting for me in my Inbox - with the rest already deleted off in my 'Deleted' folder.

So, what's the solution?

The secret is to use Artificial Intelligence. No, not robots and sci-fi warriors, but the artificial intelligence of your very own PC. Sounds crazy? No, it's very real, and very effective.

In fact, it's your very own Spam-Sniffing Cyber-Pet, that stops spam in its tracks - you don't have to feed, water or walk it, you just need to spend a bit of time training it to distinguish between the messages you do, and don't, want to read.

It can take a couple hours at first, and then you'll start noticing your spam dropping rapidly. Take a few minutes a day for a week or so, and I can practically guarantee your spam will have dropped by 98-99%. That's what I call an excellent investment of your time.
Tip! Having a host that provides exceptional Spam blocking services is a must these days. Webmasters and business owners can find their domain email particularly at risk to Spam as their email addresses may be freely available on their websites for both humans, and so-called 'spambots' to find.

After that, you'll only need to spend a few minutes every now and again to keep your Spam-Sniffer's training up to date. For example, if you get a message in the wrong place, just tell your Cyber-Pet, and it should filter it correctly next time.

Most of the time, this filtering is over 95% accurate - the more consistently you train it, the higher this accuracy level is. In fact, I can now go weeks without doing a thing - and my spam levels stay the same, i.e. exceedingly low.

The good news is that this solution is one-hundred percent free, and works on pretty much any operating system. According to New Scientist magazine, it "...does a wonderful job".

All you need is a modicum of technical knowledge to set it up, and the patience to let it work its magic on your Inbox.
Tip! Third, consider installing a spam blocking software on your computer or company network. There are a variety of spam blocking applications on the market that range in price from free to a hundred bucks.

Here's the URL: http://popfile.sourceforge.net/.

It's a free download, and for once, after months of using it, there doesn't seem to be any sort of 'catch'.

What's more, it's literally saved me hundreds of hours over the past year, and is well worth the small investment of time and effort up front.

About The Author

Steve Shaw is the developer of PopUpMaster Pro, which allows you to add unblockable popups to your web site quickly and easily, specifically designed to sign up subscribers to your list, and fast. => http://popupmaster.com.

Steve has been marketing full-time online since March 2002, developing software products and systems for e-marketing, including PopUpMaster Pro, the Click Bank Toolkit, and most recently, the free list building system at ListInferno.com.

CAN SPAM ACT SPAM Reduction; There Goes the FTC Tooting Their Own Horn Again

In my opinion the Federal Trade Commission is a complete waste of money. For them to say that there little bureaucratic effort reduced SPAM is a silly notion indeed. That little pathetic agency could not sue their way out of a paper box filled with their own press releases to the media to save their next year's budget.

Indeed it appears their press releases are written on toilet paper these days as they spew their crap across the Internet? That worthless and disgusting agency must need an arm brace every year from injury, as they are so busy patting them selves on the back. I can see the circle jerks now lined up in a circle of law school low performing lawyers who could not make it in the real world, patting each other on the back for their great work in the CAN SPAM Act. When the facts are it was free enterprise and people like Bill Gates and the other great companies who helped figure out how to curb the growth of SPAM. Free Enterprise? Ever heard of it at the FTC? Apparently not!

The Federal Trade Commission is a complete waste of taxpayer's money and a bizarre excuse for an agency associated with the Justice Department. They make the DOJ looks stupid and incompetent. In my opinion some needs to put forth a bill to reduce the FTC's budget by half this year and half next year and then another half of what's left the year after and close that ridiculous façade of an agency before they do any more misrepresentation on consumers. Think on it, this is your government at work?

Lance Winslow

Spam Solutions Dave's Quest For The Ultimate Anti Spam Package

Searching for the perfect Anti Spam appliance can be like the quest for the Holy Grail. You're never quite sure whether what you're looking for really exists.

There are a variety of solutions on offer, ranging from disposable email addresses to getting your own anti spam exchange server. I've tried most of them. I don't think I've discovered the anti spam software Grail yet, but I've made some important discoveries.

Do you need a Spam Solution? It's curious. We accept unsolicited advertising in most areas of life. We didn't ask for advertising on TV or radio, yet we don't refer to it as spam. We certainly don't ask for billboards, as if we need something to stare at on our way to work, and yet we don't normally complain either, and when we do, it tends to be about content, not about the fact that we didn't 'opt in' to billboard advertising as a medium. Yet when unsolicited advertising comes to us in the form of email, we tend to get very upset and not a little self-righteous. What's the difference?

I assume the difference is that it's harder to deal with.

With the TV or radio, we simply change channels. With newspapers and billboards, there's always something else to look at. Yet when unsolicited emails fill our inbox, we can't just ignore them and hope they'll go away. At the very least, we have to delete them. And given that spammers routinely try to make their rubbish look like something we were expecting, we have to spend time sorting the wheat from the chaff. When there are only a handful of tares in the wheat, this is manageable. But the longer you stay online, the larger that handful becomes.

Three types of Anti Spam Solutions 1. Prevention is better than cure

Perhaps the most obvious solution is to avoid getting on the spammers' mailing list in the first place. Some people suggest that if you follow a few basic rules and never give out your email address to companies that you don't know, you will never end up on spam lists.

Unfortunately this only works up to a point. I've found over the years that I get plenty of spam to addresses that I never give out. How do the spammers get me? They generate random addresses until they find me!
Tip! Having a host that provides exceptional Spam blocking services is a must these days. Webmasters and business owners can find their domain email particularly at risk to Spam as their email addresses may be freely available on their websites for both humans, and so-called 'spambots' to find.

The spammers pick major players - AOL, Hotmail, etc. - and send out a million emails to dave000@aol.com, dave002@aol.com, dave003@aol.com, etc. From a million, perhaps only a thousand emails don't bounce back, but that means they've found 1000 real people, and they'll now keep those addresses, mail to them again, and sell the addresses to other spammers!

Bottom line: you can't avoid the spammers forever.

Of course, you can keep changing email addresses and so keep one step ahead of the spammers. Disposable email addresses are not hard to find nowadays. The problem here though is that you end up wasting more time than you save. Keeping all your contacts up to date with your ever-changing email address is likely to consume far more time than a daily clean-out of your inbox?
Tip! Now the problem I have with spam blocking software is that I must configure it to filter out certain email types, categories and words. I happen to use Outlook 2003.

2. Anti Spam Inbox Filters

The second type of spam appliances are those that sort through the email that is in your inbox and throw it out before you get to it.

These programs generally require both an initial anti spam software purchase and an ongoing subscription, as file definitions continually need to be updated.

This type of solution is superior to thinking that you can avoid being spammed. It is not ideal though. Three reasons:
Tip! This article was provide courtesy of Spam-Site.com where you can learn lots more about spam blocking software and utilities.

It can be quite expensive.

The spam is still downloaded to your inbox. This can take up a lot of time if you're receiving between two and three hundred spams per day (as I do).

It is never 100% accurate. The technology of offensive weaponry always stays ahead of defensive weaponry. Hence spammers will most likely always be a step ahead of those who are trying to keep them out. Some spam will get through, and even more importantly, some emails you wanted to receive will be mistakenly weeded out as spam! Now admittedly, with this last problem, most inbox-based anti spam solutions do allow you to review the emails that they've flagged as spam before you delete them, but this takes you back to the task of sorting through all your emails, and the whole idea of your anti spam appliance is that it's supposed to free you up from doing this!
Tip! Third, consider installing a spam blocking software on your computer or company network. There are a variety of spam blocking applications on the market that range in price from free to a hundred bucks.

3. Server-based Anti Spam Solutions

In my opinion, server-based Anti Spam solutions are the way to go.

Most commonly, this solution just invokes filters, similar to those used in the inbox-based anti spam solutions. They just bounce back an email to the sender, asking them if they will identify themselves as a real human being.
Is Your Spouse Cheating? What is Your Spouse Doing Online? So when some machine sends you an email automatically, it will reside in the 'unverified' box on your server until you decide to either verify it or let the system delete it after a few months.

Spam Arrest is not the only company that takes this approach. There may be better systems out there by now? Look around for yourself. Check out the various options. I can't tell you with certainty which software anti spam solution is the best one for you, but I'd encourage you to be clear about one thing. The problem with spam is that it wastes time. This is because our email addresses are known and used by many of our contacts and may also be printed on business cards and other material. We certainly don't move to a different residence because of some junk mail in our letter boxes. Luckily, there are some very effective ways to combat spam and one such was is using a Spam filtering tool.

The particular tool that I am referring to is called MailWasher. It is a tool that I cannot do without. I've been using it for about 2 years now and my running totals shows that 72% of emails received are automatically deleted by Mailwasher. For more product information on Mailwasher, please visit: www.BSDRegister.com/products/mailwasher

Mailwasher is a piece of software that works at the source i.e. it connects directly to your inbox on the server and takes care of emails there. This is very different to using email filters in your email software for example Outlook or Thunderbird. The major difference is that Mailwasher wipes out emails on the email server so that you never have to download them. Having a filter in Outlook would mean that the email has to first be downloaded onto your computer and then examined and dealt with accordingly. For those messages spreading viruses, this could well pose a threat.

Mailwasher is easy to setup and takes a few minutes. There is a 30-day free trial of the software so that you can have ample time to decide if it is working for you. Initially, I started setting up my own spam filters and was having some success, but then I stumbled upon a link on the company's website that pointed to a link where an avid user was offering his filters for free. I downloaded those and installed them and have never look back. The amount of spam that was identified started to steadily increase until the 72% level that it is at today. This means that on average, 3 of every 10 eamils I receive are legitimate and are allowed through by Mailwasher. The rest are deleted at the source and I don't have to spend time downloading them. This is a big deal if you are using dialup access to the Internet.
Tip! Spammers are not mentally challenged, as their spelling would have them appear. They spell words incorrectly on purpose to get around the various spam blocking devices in your email and on your server.

There are many controls within the software. You can specify emails be deleted automatically without your knowledge or you could have the program mark them for deletion but let you glance at them just in case. This is useful initially until you get a good feel for it. There are many other options that fall in between these. The good thing is that they are all on one screen.

There is a concept of a blacklist and a whitelist. You can import all of your address book from Outlook with a couple of clicks and from other email programs as well. These go into what is called a whitelist. Mailwasher will allow all emails through that are on the whitelist. It will mark or automatically delete all those that are on the blacklist. Adding or removing someone from either list is a very simple point and click exercise.
Tip! Third, consider installing a spam blocking software on your computer or company network. There are a variety of spam blocking applications on the market that range in price from free to a hundred bucks.

Mailwasher also allows the setting up of legitimate filters. These are methods of specifying an email as legitimate. For example, if you identify all emails coming from your company domain name as being legitimate, then all messages from your coworkers will be allowed through without you having to specify each person. This is achieved using a wildcard setting such as "*@youworkdomain.com". This can also be used to blacklist an entire domain such that all messages are immediately marked for deletion or automatically deleted depending on your settings.

MailWasher is an independent program and does not interfere with your email software. It sits in the system tray and does its work diligently. In my case, it checks my inbox every 10 minutes and does a cleanout. I have my email software setup to only retrieve messages when I instruct it to so that MailWasher has the most opportunity to do it's work.
Tip! Now the problem I have with spam blocking software is that I must configure it to filter out certain email types, categories and words. I happen to use Outlook 2003.

Mailwasher also has more advanced controls, one of them being something known as "Origin of Spam". There are servers on the internet which list known spam addresses. When you receive a message from one of these addresses, it is automatically marked as spam and deleted without your filters even being invoked. This is a remarkable system and comes free with MailWasher. A whopping 14% of emails that I get are identified in this manner and automatically deleted.
Tip! This article was provide courtesy of Spam-Site.com where you can learn lots more about spam blocking software and utilities.

MailWasher is an indispensable tool in my email arsenal. If spam is a problem for you, it could do likewise for you. Download your free trial today and use it for 30 days. If you like it, you only pay $37 which in my book is a small price to pay for so much time saved everyday.
How to block SPAM bots? They analyzed dozens of items within the data. The most compelling was the spam to ham ratios. Ham is defined as legitimate email sent by legitimate email senders. The compiled list of over 50 words with the highest spam to ham ratio was the result.

Words like 'click' and 'here' don't show up as high, since they are used so often in legitimate email. The ActivSoftware list also reveals that words like 'madam' which is rarely found in legitimate email, while readily found in spam email, had very high ratios. Using this method the team produced a superior list of words found in spam email ordered not just by frequency of usage in spam, but offset by the frequency of usage in legitimate emails. The words are ordered from highest to lowest Spam to Ham ratio.

This study empowered the coders and business employees at ActivSoftware with an increased ability to continue to track and, according to the team at ActivSoftware, eliminate the negative impacts of spam on the business community. The team at ActivSoftware continues to attempt to learn spammers in order to increase the effectiveness and deliverability for customers using XM Mail Server.

Here's the top ten:

* homeowner
* discreet
* madam
* materially
* unclaimed
* anticipates
* soma
* preapproved
* unconditionally
* beneficiary

Note: This list has been updated and might change frequently as we continue to hone it in. Email, Spam, Spam and More Spam

You just sat at your desk, opened your email account and what do you get? First there is some anonymous donkey from an anonymous and anything but respectable mortgage lender telling you that they can arrange your finance at 3% and all you need to do now that your application is approved is to sign along the dotted line and get in touch with them. This is despite the fact that you have never heard of them or even approached them - ever!.

Next we have luscious Lucy asking you if you remember her from when you last met. Her email tells you that she still loves you and she has sent you her personal photos just for your eyes only. Well, you certainly made the right impression there didn't you. No, don't click on the click on the link or the attachment……..

Just as your thoughts start to wander and you begin to imagine Lucy in her long fur coat and fish net stockings you have another email. This is one you can't afford to miss out on. Viagra. You need viagra for Lucy. She needs you. What luck. After much deliberation you decide to pass on the viagra but no sooner have you passed it by……..whats this? someone else is there at the ready with - sildenafil citrate. Oh but hang on, doesn't the box look the same as the one in the last email? Its viagra again. By now any thoughts of rampant fun with the luscious Lucy are becoming jaded. Just what else could be in the remaining 120 emails you have to sift through.

The next half an hour is spent sifting through emails from important people wanting to show you how to make millions on the internet and others bombarding you with products and ezines about the latest online dating clubs. Someone even wants to sell you some cut price tampax - and your male!
Tip! Third, consider installing a spam blocking software on your computer or company network. There are a variety of spam blocking applications on the market that range in price from free to a hundred bucks.

Finally, you are nearly there. So far you have recovered one invoice from all the emails and notification from someone asking about the return of their water filter which you are unsure about. In fact you don't even remember their water filter. The email opens and this one is from the desk of President Mbongo Bungo Esq a Nigerian Oil Company director. This could be promising. There is talk of money. Not a few hundred or several thousand either but real money. This guy is loaded…wow…this is the one.
Tip! This article was provide courtesy of Spam-Site.com where you can learn lots more about spam blocking software and utilities.

Or maybe not

Tip: Fed up with all the day to crap of junk mail I changed all the email addresses on my websites to forms. I set scripts on my servers that report the users directly to their ISP for abuse. Finally, all incoming mail goes into my junk box not my incoming mailbox. This makes it easy to dump all in one go. I then scan through it in less than a couple of minutes and I mercilessly trash the lot. Most people I know and deal with are on my preference list anyway.

How much is your time worth? There is something wrong with your business if you are paranoid about losing an email enquiry and having to find the time to sift through hundreds of emails. Get organised and work smart. You will be glad that you did.
Tip! Spammers are not mentally challenged, as their spelling would have them appear.
